Sun product formulation: safety, efficacy and innovation

Cosmetic formulation is an intricate process, especially crucial for sunscreen products, where UV protection is paramount. Substances are carefully selected and combined, followed by extensive testing to ensure stability and safety.

A key aspect in formulation is consumer safety, achieved through the study of interactions between raw materials and packaging. This is essential in sunscreen products, where protection, chemical and physical stability and sensory performance must be maintained even during sun exposure.

In order to guarantee the stated protection, UV filters must be solubilised or dispersed in an appropriate manner, maintaining this condition over time. The selection of UV filters is based on the desired sun protection factor (SPF), which is also calculated by means of in silico simulations.

Despite simulations, in vivo SPF testing remains essential to verify the real efficacy of the product, as results depend on the interaction between the sunscreen product and the skin, the type of vehicle and the uniformity of the applied film.

Formulating a sunscreen product is one of the most complex challenges in cosmetic science. The required performance in terms of functional and sensory activity must be guaranteed over time, without compromising efficacy and safety of use.
