Chemical contaminants in food: new updates to regulation (EU) 915/2023

Two important updates concerning chemical contaminants in food have been published, with significant changes that extend and strengthen European legislation.

  1. Commission Regulation (EU) 2024/1756 of 25 June 2024:
This update brings significant new provisions to existing regulations, expanding the range of contaminants to be monitored and revising the maximum permissible levels for certain substances. It also strengthens monitoring protocols.
Special attention is given to hazardous substances like mycotoxins, tropane alkaloids, hydrogen cyanide, dioxins, and PCBs, which are commonly found in widely consumed foods such as milk, dairy products, meat, and eggs.

  2. Commission Regulation (EU) 2024/1987 of 30 July 2024:
This update introduces new limits for nickel content in food, based on the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) scientific evaluations. Nickel, associated with both chronic and acute toxicity, has been linked to increased food intolerance and serious health risks, such as miscarriage.
A dietary guidance threshold (DGT) of 13 µg/kg has been set for exposure. Foods affected include nuts, chestnuts, pine nuts, walnuts, cashews, root and bulb vegetables, cabbage, fresh herbs, pulses, oil seeds, soy, seaweed, rice, cocoa, chocolate, infant formulas, and fruit juices.
