Green light for the approval of Prallethrin as a biocidal active substance
Following the favorable opinion of the ECHA Biocidal Products Committee, the European Commission has recently published the draft regulation approving Prallethrin as a biocidal active substance, intended for use in insecticidal and acaricidal products (PT 18).
The approval is scheduled to take effect on March 1, 2026. However, Prallethrin is classified as a "candidate for substitution," with its approval expiration date set for February 29, 2036, ensuring a validity period of 10 years.
Companies wishing to register a new insecticidal or acaricidal PMC product containing Prallethrin must submit their application by March 1, 2025. For existing products already on the market, the biocidal dossier must be submitted by March 1, 2026, to take advantage of the transition period.
In the two official documents from the European Commission (1 and 2) are outlined the specific characteristics of Prallethrin that must be adhered to, including minimum purity requirements for the active substance. Additionally, they detail the specific conditions for authorizing biocidal products containing Prallethrin and the conditions for marketing items treated with these products.
These guidelines are crucial to ensure that the use of Prallethrin is both safe and effective, fully complying with European regulations designed to protect public health and the environment.
