Environmental Impact of Consumer Products

Consumer products play a key role in the Circular Economy

An economic model that responds to the desire of sustainable growth, moving from a "production-consumption-disposal" structure to a virtuous circle in which life span of products is being extended, helping to reduce the amount of waste and optimize energy consumption.

The transition to a more sustainable and circular economy implies the need to reuse, renew and recycle the various materials, bringing what is normally considered "waste" to be a new and important resource.

To allow and support the regeneration of materials, it is essential that there is an adequate design phase of the consumer products upstream with a view to the end of life of the products. The various constituent materials must therefore be as recyclable as possible and free from hazardous substances; in the case of bio-based matrices, the various components must be degradable at the end of their life.

The design must consider the sustainability criteria, with an optimization of the necessary resources and providing that at least a certain percentage of the constituents of the equipment can be recovered and recycled.

Additionally, there are also the impacts related to environmental contamination phenomena due to the fragmentation of components, as well as the impact of recycling and transformation of materials.

Our main activities:

  • Biodegradability evaluation
  • Determination of the main respiration indices
  • Quantification and typing of microplastics in the different environmental matrices
  • Release test from artefacts
  • Ad hoc studies to evaluate the potential detachment of microplastics from industrial and catering equipment
  • Evaluation of the materials recyclability rate
  • Search for dangerous substances regulated by the reference regulations
