The solar challenge is played out on formulation

Nowadays, sunscreen product formulators are facing the challenge of creating econosustainable products. Why do we call it "a challenge"? Formulation is a delicate process consisting of finding the perfect balance combining different ingredients to create a product that has multiple characteristics. It is not only about agreeableness, but also, and more importantly, about attributes that relate to product functionality, which today's consumers value particularly highly. In addition, as a result of the latest studies and the pressing needs from a sustainability perspective, it has become essential to implement measures to ensure the sustainability of the product throughout its life cycle.

The last point refers to recent studies that have generated concern toward the impact of solar products on the marine ecosystem. On the functionality side, however, legislative obligations and an increasingly demand to meet within a highly competitive market make the work even harder. It means that it is no longer enough to focus on UVB rays. Suncreeens must protect against UVA rays, too, and offer multiple other protection features (e.g. IR and blue light protection, sweat resistance, or special formulation for sensitive skin) to be competitive and to fit to the market trends of creating new formulas and original textures.

These considerations are essential both to keep their product on the market and to launch new solutions, but it is certainly not easy to be able to find a good compromise.

It is at least as important to know the subject matter as the market and target audience. This is the reason why an article has been entirely dedicated to the topic. Published on Cosmetics & Toletries - October 2022, the article writtend by Nicola Lionetti - Cosmetic Laboratory Manager and Marta Montoli R&D Specialist, offers interesting insights and key information.
